The Old Guard is a 2020 action movie directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood with Charlize Theron in the lead. The film follows a group of immortal mercenaries with regenerative healing abilities that do not let them die. The group is able to keep their identity secret for decades until they work for a former CIA operative who kills them on a mission and films their regeneration. The group now has to fight to keep their identity secret.
The movie immediately found itself on Netflix’s top 10 most-watched movies list since it was streamed for over 180 million hours. However, the film later got bumped out by movies like Enola Holmes (2020), Army of the Dead (2021), and The Kissing Booth 2. Still, it was a big success which made it impossible for Netflix not to consider making The Old Guard 2. Let’s see if there is any news regarding a sequel.

The Old Guard 2 was confirmed by Netflix last summer with a new director heading the project. The new director will be Victoria Mahoney, the 1st woman to direct a Star Wars film. On August 26, 2021, Mahoney shared the news on Instagram saying that she was currently on a location scout for the next installment. The filming, however, only started on June 3, 2022, as confirmed by the director, again with a post on her social media account.

We expect the movie to come in late 2023 since the filming has just begun and is supposed to last for a few months. Then, the post-production stage will add a few more months too. So, late summer or fall 2023 will be the possible The Old Guard 2 release date.

The main cast members of the original movie are set to return for the sequel, including Charlize Theron (Andy), Kiki Layne (Nile), Matthias Schoenaerts (Booker), Luca Marinelli (Nicky), Marwan Kenzari (Yusuf Alkaysani Joe), Veronica Ngo (Quynh), and Chiwetel Ejiofor (Copley).
That said, the director also confirmed the addition of 2 new faces to The Old Guard 2 cast: Uma Thurman and Henry Golding. Their roles are not specified, so we are yet to know what role they will play in the movie.

The movie is based on a comic book of the same name, written by American author Greg Rucka. The main character Andy’s full name is Andromache of Scythia. Andromache is a character from Greek mythology whose name means “fighter of men” or “man fighter.” There is also an Amazon warrior who has the same name. That said, the movie is most likely inspired by this character from mythology, although she is not immortal in these ancient stories.
So, the main character Andy was created with inspiration from either Greek mythology or Amazon legends. Of course, there is no evidence that these are true stories, so we cannot say that the movie and the comic book are based on a true story.

At the movie’s end, we see that Andy’s wounds were not healing by themselves, which means she lost her immortality. But the film did not provide any explanation as to why this happened. The movie did not delve into the issue of immortality altogether. We didn’t get an answer telling us how these people could be immortal. Maybe we will get some reasoning in the 2nd movie.
However, there is also a moment in the movie where Andy says the immortality of the old guards is finite. So, they can turn immortal at any time. They don’t know when. But there is no explanation given as to why this occurs. We guess every good thing has an end.
