Enola Holmes Books
The Enola Holmes Mysteries is a detective novel series by American author Nancy Springer. The series consists of seven books, the first of which, titled The Case of the Missing Marquess, was published in 2007 and was nominated for an Edgar Award along with the 5th book.
The book is a pastiche, meaning that it imitates the style of an earlier literary work. The author thoroughly researched the Victorian era, the literary style and language of the time to write in the style of a Victorian author. The main characters and settings were borrowed from the original Sherlock Holmes novels by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, but the character of Enola, whose name ironically is “alone” when read backwards, was created by Springer herself. Because of the age gap between Sherlock and Enola – Sherlock is 20 years older than her – Springer decided that Enola should be a “mistake child,” not wanting her to be Sherlock’s daughter.
The names of the books in chronological order:
The Case of the Missing Marquess, The Case of the Left-Handed Lady, The Case of the Bizarre Bouquets, The Case of the Peculiar Pink Fan, The Case of the Cryptic Crinoline, The Case of the Gypsy Goodbye, and the last, Enola Holmes and the Black Barouche, published in 2021.
The series adapted to screen and premiered on September 23, 2020. If you’re a bookworm and like Victorian detective fiction, you definitely shouldn’t miss the book series, as it certainly offers more than a movie can.
