2 months after Season 2 of the series, in September 2021, Disney renewed the series for a 3rd season. In December 2021, it was confirmed that Rodrigo would return to the show to reprise her role as Nini. However, it later became definite that the actress/singer is stepping down from her leading role and will only have a recurring role in the 3rd season. On the other hand, Bassett will be returning as a series regular.

In the 3rd season of the High School Musical the series will have 8 episodes, the 1st of which will drop on Disney+ on July 27. The name of the 1st episode is Happy Campers, and the following episodes will be released weekly on the platform, which means we’ll be able to watch the final episode of the season on September 14.

Those who 1st heard about the series probably wondered if it is connected to the original High School Musical movies. Well, in the world of the series, just like ours, the film happened with Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens as the leads. But the plot of the original movie is not followed by the series. However, the high school where the original film was shot, East High School in Salt Lake City, is the setting for the series. The high school drama teacher Miss Jenn, played by Kate Reinders, learns that East High never made a musical on High School Musical, so she becomes determined to make that happen. So, the high schoolers in High School Musical: The Musical: The series make a musical of the original movies.

The series follows teenagers from East High School, such as Rodrigo’s Nini, who auditions to participate in the musical. Nini auditions to play Hudgen’s role in the original movie, Gabriella, while Bassett wants to play Efron’s role, Troy.

Although viewers of the series loved seeing Rodrigo and Bassett as Troy and Gabriella, some still think they can never replace the original characters. But Gabriella, rightfully, did not want to give up her future dreams and decided to go to the college she wanted, while Troy chose a college close to hers (32.7 miles, to be exact!).

So, at the end of the 3rd movie, the pair goes off to college and are still together. We learned last month that Zac Efron wants to make a 4th movie, so hopefully, if that happens, we will learn more about this couple’s future.
