2.5 months after the release of Space Force Season 2, the Steve Carell-led series was canceled by Netflix. Co-created by both Carrell and The Office showrunner Greg Danniels, the series was a parody of Donald Trump’s wish of establishing a Space Force, as another branch of the US military. Carell played the force’s Chief of Space Operations, General Mark R. Naird, while John Malkovich played the chief scientist, Dr. Adrian Mallory.
The show’s 1st season came out in 2020 and received terrible reviews from critics. The Rotten Tomatoes rating of Season 1 was 39%, rated by 96 critics. Most critics agreed that the show’s side characters were not interesting and that the story had cheap humor and shallow narrative constructions. The 2nd season received a higher rating, 90% but it was reviewed only by 10 critics.
You may rightly wonder why the series got canceled. We have the answers for you below!
Why did Space Force get Canceled?
The cancelation news of Space Force came right after Netflix announced that they had lost over 200.000 subscribers which caused a huge drop in their share price. For instance, one of Netflix’s biggest investors announced that they were removing $1.1 billion of funding. It seems these developments caused Netflix to make cutbacks. We believe this was also the reason for Raising Dion‘s cancelation, another Netflix series.
Although the show did not have a sensational amount of success on Netflix’s top 10 lists, it still stayed for 45 days in the top 10 of a few countries, like Australia, Hungary, and the US. The critic reviews seemed to be getting better as well, as we mentioned above. Most importantly, the end of the last season left us at a cliffhanger and opened up a new storyline for Space Force Season 3. So, at this moment, the only reason for the show’s cancelation seems to be Netflix’s cutbacks.

The Office (2005-2013)
The ultimate workplace comedy The Office was also created by Greg Daniels, and of course, included Steve Carrell. If you weren’t living under a rock for the past 20 years, there is no way you haven’t heard about The Office. Its story is about a paper company named Dunder Mifflin, in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Carrell’s character is Michael Scott, the regional manager of the branch.
Avenue 5 (2020- )
Starring Hugh Laurie and Josh Gad as the lead characters, Avenue 5 is another workplace comedy but it’s set in space. The story is about a group of intergalactic travelers on a cruise ship that is sent a few degrees off course after they experience accidents. This unfortunate event makes the journey home last 3 years longer despite the original trip having been planned as only 8 weeks. With not-enough supplies, the crew has to struggle and find a way to safely return home.
The Chair (2021- )
The last show we’re going to recommend that is similar to Space Force is The Chair, starring Sandra Oh. Oh’s character is a Professor at the English department of the fictional Pembroke University. She is the newly appointed chair who becomes the 1st woman chosen for the position. The series is quite funny as the character tries to deal with old-aged conservative professors, her strong-willed adoptive daughter, and her relationship with her colleague and friend Bill Dobson.
