Disney has been focusing on headstrong and bold female characters lately, which has led to us seeing more movies like Frozen. The film caught attention shortly after the release of the first film back in 2013 with its captivating story. Frozen 3 is already eagerly awaited, but if you don’t know what to watch until the sequel comes out, here are 6 movies like Frozen for you.
1. Brave
The 2012 animated movie Brave is one of the movies like Frozen because it revolves around a female character. Set in the Scottish Highlands during the Middle Ages, the movie tells the story of Princess Merida of DunBroch, who defies an ancient custom causing chaos in the kingdom by expressing the desire not to be betrothed. When her mother, Queen Elinor, falls victim to a curse and turns into a bear, Merida must do some soul-searching and find the key to saving the kingdom.
The film’s creator, Brenda Chapman, drew inspiration for the film’s story from her relationship with her daughter. It won the Academy Award, the Golden Globe and the BAFTA Award for Best Animated Feature. If you want to experience the courage of Merinda, you can head over to Disney+ or Amazon Prime Video.
2. Onward

3. The Good Dinosaur
Among other movies like Frozen, The Good Dinosaur holds a special place because it’s the first Pixar film directed by a non-white director, Peter Sohn in his feature directorial debut. The film features big names like A. J. Buckley, Jeffrey Wright, Sam Elliott, Anna Paquin, Raymond Ochoa and Frances McDormand. It tells an odyssey and shows an alternative history in which non-avian dinosaurs never became extinct. It follows a young, shy Apatosaurus named Arlo who meets an unlikely human friend as he journeys through a dangerous and mysterious landscape to return home after being washed downstream by a rainstorm. Watch it on Apple TV or Disney+.
4. Ferdinand
The fourth film on our list of movies like Frozen revolves around a bull named Ferdinand who refuses to participate in bullfighting, but is forced back into the arena where his beliefs are challenged when he competes against the greatest bullfighter in the world. A loose remake of the 1938 animated film Ferdinand the Bull, the film is loosely based on the 1936 children’s book The Story of Ferdinand by Munro Leaf and Robert Lawson and received nominations at the Golden Globe Awards and the Academy Awards. Ferdinand is available to stream on Disney+, Apple TV and Amazon Prime Video.
5. Raya and the Last Dragon
Here’s another animated movie like Frozen that revolves around a strong female character. Raya and the Last Dragon was released in 2021 and revolves around a warrior princess, Raya, who seeks the fabled Last Dragon in hopes of restoring the dragon gem that would bring back her father and drive the evil spirits, the Druun, from the land of Kumandra. Besides the fact that it follows a female character, it also shows the Southeast Asian cultures, which gives the film an extra point with its non-androcentric point of view. Raya and the Last Dragon is available on Amazon Prime Video and Disney+.
6. Moana
When we talk about movies like Frozen, we can’t leave out Moana. Like some of the films mentioned above, the 2016 animated film Moana revolves around a female main character, and the story is set on the Polynesian island of Motunui, a sub-region of Oceania. The film revolves around the title character Moana, the strong-willed daughter of a Polynesian village chief who’s chosen by the ocean itself to reunite a mystical relic with the goddess Te Fiti.
When her island is struck by a plague, Moana sets out to find Maui, a legendary demigod, in hopes of returning the relic to Te Fiti and saving her people. The plot is original, but inspired by Polynesian myths. So, it incorporates meta-narratives from mythology as it successfully demonstrates the hero’s journey while showing its viewers about key archetypes related to Mother Nature. Watch it on Disney+ or Amazon Prime Video.
