The 5-episode-long 1st season of The Unlikely Murderer was released on Netflix in November 2021 and although the show hasn’t been that popular among Netflix audiences, there is still a considerable amount of viewers waiting for The Unlikely Murderer Season 2. The series’ 1st season was based on the murder of Olof Palme, the Swedish Prime Minister, who was shot in Stockholm in 1986. The killer was not found for decades and in 2020 the chief prosecutor of the case concluded that the primary suspect was Stig Engström, a worker in an insurance company, who killed himself in 2000.
Netflix did not see him as the suspect though and as the 1st episode shows Stig Engström killing the prime minister and he is portrayed as an eccentric who can outwit the police. Netflix is currently being sued for the defamation of the actual events. If we put aside all the controversy around The Unlikely Murderer, we can focus on the series itself and answer if there will be a The Unlikely Murderer Season 2.
The Unlikely Murderer Season 2
If you are waiting for Season 2 of this Swedish drama, we regret to inform you that it’s not going to happen. When the show was 1st released, it was announced to be a limited series, meaning its length was already determined as 1 season. The 1st season with its 5 episodes is the only season of the show and there will not be a The Unlikely Murderer Season 2.
How true is The Unlikely Murderer?
The series is based partially on a true story, the murder of the Swedish president. But the show fictionalizes the story, meaning that it does not handle the events as they went down. Most importantly, in real life, Stig Engström was only defined as a suspect and there was no proof of him being the actual killer. However, the Netflix series portrays the events as Engström was the killer which is not certain in real life.
The Unlikely Murderer Season 1 is based on a novel of the same name, written by Thomas Pettersson and published in 2018. Like the novel, the series presents the fictionalized version of the events. The real version of the events was as follows: Prime minister Olof Palme and his wife were coming back from the cinema and walking on the street when they were shot by an unidentified figure. Palme was taken to a hospital but he was pronounced dead.
Stig Engström, a man who worked as a graphic designer in Skandia insurance company, presented himself as a witness to the murder. However, his account of the murder scene did not match the accounts of other witnesses so he was thought to be a man who was just seeking some media attention. He was then called the Skandia man. At first, he was pursued as a suspect but the police found another suspect, a man named Christer Pettersson who was arrested and sentenced to life in jail. He did not stay in jail because there wasn’t enough evidence.
The case was finally closed in 2020 when the chief prosecutor announced that Engström was the primary suspect but they couldn’t prosecute him because he was already dead.
The Netflix series, right from the start, accepts that Engström was the killer and tries to show that he had personal and political motives to commit the murder.
