After almost a two-year-long wait, The Last Kingdom Season 5 is finally here, released on Netflix today, the 9th of March. The show’s fourth season was released in April 2020 and in April 2021 it was announced that Season 5 will be the last season of the series. The show has been going on for 7 years throughout which we witnessed invasions, battles, victories, love, and friendship. So, it was upsetting for fans of the show to hear such news.
The series is based on best-selling novels by Bernard Cornwell, named The Saxon Stories. Before the show started to air in 2015, the book series had ten books and the series was planned according to these ten books. Every season was supposed to adopt two books from the series so the showrunners and the actors knew from the beginning that the show would only last for 5 seasons. However, since The Last Kingdom dropped on Netflix, Cornwell actually wrote 3 more novels for his book series but these are not going to be adopted by the tv show.
The great news for the fans of both the show and the books is that these 3 recent books by Cornwell will be used in a movie adaptation, the official The Last Kingdom movie which will be called Seven Kings Must Die, announced by none other than Uhtred (Alexander Reymond) himself. The movie’s plot is still under wraps so we do not really know which characters or what kind of story it will involve. All we know is that the movie will be based on the 3 novels by Cornwell, War of the Wolf, Sword of Kings, and War Lord.
Until then, however, we still have Season 5 to enjoy and we know what most fans are curious about: which characters are going to be in The Last Kingdom Season 5 and who is leaving the series? Here, we have the answers for you!
Eliza Butterworth
There were rightly a lot of doubts about whether Aelswith (Eliza Butterworth) would be returning for the new season since she was poisoned by Aethelhelm (Adrian Schiller) in the previous season. However, the good news is, Butterworth herself confirmed that she will be back for the final season. So, it will be exciting to see her plotting revenge for her poisoning.
Alexander Dreymon
There is no doubt that Alexander Dreymon will reprise his role as Uhtred in The Last Kingdom Season 5 because without him, there would not be The Last Kingdom. At the end of the fourth season, Uhtred managed to avoid being killed by Brida who vowed that either Uhtred would die in her hands or she in his. So, we will see in this season what is going to happen to our main character. Will he be killed by Brida or kill Brida himself?
Millie Brady
The daughter of Alfred and Aelswith, Aethelflaed, played by Millie Brady, is coming back for the final season of the series. In Season 4, we witnessed her becoming Uhtred’s lover and the ruler of Mercia. We know for sure she will be in Season 5, as the series’ social media account also shared her picture with a hashtag that reads, #tlk5.
Arnas Fedaravicius
Another member of The Last Kingdom cast is Arnas Federavicius who plays Sihtric will also be back for the final season. First appearing in Season 2, Sihtric became one of the allies of Uhtred as he slowly started to trust him. We saw him fight besides Uhtred in the fourth season. We have no doubt that Sihtric will stay loyal to his friend and ally in the final season as well.
Mark Rowley
Mark Rowley as Finan will be another returning character in The Last Kingdom Season 5. He is one of the main warriors sworn to Uhtred and has been with him since Season 2. We will continue seeing their alliance and friendship in the final season as well.
Emily Cox
Emily Cox’s Brida will be returning for the final season as The Last Kingdom’s Twitter account shared her picture last summer with a comment about what her future is holding. The account also shared the first look at Cox as she is returning for her role as Brida.
In the last few seasons, Brida has been down on an antagonistic path, being one of the villains of the series. We are curiously waiting for what the ruthless warrior is going to do this season!
Ian Hart
Unfortunately, Ian Hart’s Father Beocca will not be returning for The Last Kingdom Season 5, as he gave his last breath in episode 3 of Season 4. We were wrecked by his sudden death as he was always a father and a friend to Uhtred who broke down after Beocca’s death, saying that he failed him. It was sad to see Beocca go so early in the fourth season and also devastating to not see him for the remaining episodes.
