In 2017, iCarly actress Jennette McCurdy quit acting, saying, “I never got the chance to be cast in a project I was proud to be part of. Now I have a better chance of making things I’m proud of than getting cast in things I’m proud of.” Now she’s focusing on directing and producing. So far, she has directed four films, one feature and the rest shorts.

From February to March 2020, I’m Glad My Mom Died, her tragicomedy one-woman show, was staged in theaters in Los Angeles and New York City; plans for more dates were postponed and eventually canceled because of the pandemic outbreak. Later, in 2022, she published a memoir of the same name along with her show.

McCurdy also began hosting an interview podcast called Empty Inside in 2020.

I’m Glad My Mom Died is about Jennette’s career as a child actress and her difficult relationship with her abusive mother, who died in 2013. When McCurdy was two to three years old, her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent several surgeries, chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant. In 2010, her mother’s cancer returned, and in 2013, she died; McCurdy was 21 years old.

McCurdy shared that she was mentally and sexually abused by her mother. She also explained that her mother pushed her to act when she was only 6 years old to support her family financially and because her mother wanted to become an actress herself. Moreover, the former actress claimed that her mother contributed to her eating disorder by introducing her to calorie restriction when she was 11 years old. She was treated for anorexia and bulimia.

The actress also revealed that her mother gave her vaginal and breast exams until she was 16 or 17, supposedly for cancer prevention, and never let her shower alone.

To that end, Jennette began drinking heavily shortly before her mother’s death and is now trying to manage her drinking problems. She refused to appear in the remake of iCarly in 2021 because the series reminds her of the abuse by her mother in the original series.

Nickelodeon fans will remember that Jennette McCurdy and Ariana Grande worked together in the iCarly spin-off Sam & Cat. However, in her book, Jennette revealed that she didn’t enjoy working with Ariana Grande on Sam & Cat. But why doesn’t Jennette McCurdy like Ariana Grande?

Actress and author McCurdy revealed in her book I’m Glad My Mother Died that she was jealous of Ariana Grande at the time. McCurdy explained the reason for her jealousy of Grande by saying that she was forced to turn down several acting offers outside the show. Grande, on the other hand, was able to skip episodes of Sam & Cat for her music.

Jennette also claimed that she was “exploited” during the show and Nickelodeon offered her $300,000 to keep quiet about her negative experiences.
