Amy is seen dealing with the tragic death of her mother as the narrative of Heartland begins in the first episode, and later she recognizes that she has a special talent for tending horses, especially the ones in trouble.
After their mother dies, Amy’s elder sister, Lou takes the responsibility for the family and arrives from New York to help operate the family property of the Flemings. Lou is a thoughtful and orderly character, displaying a very stable figure for the family.
Lou and Amy’s granddad Jack Bartlett is a former rodeo champion who grew up on Heartland Ranch and it looks like he is having some trouble letting go of the past. Jack owns the Heartland ranch and he might seem a little bit hard to approach at first but he is the only father figure to Amy and Lou.
