Hot Shop

As mentioned earlier, Blown Away is a Canadian reality show. So it was filmed in Hamilton, Ontario. This is a port city in southwestern Canada and is about an hour’s drive from Toronto. Marblemedia, the show’s production company, turned an abandoned warehouse into a hot shop for 10 participants and gave each 10 kilns to blow out the glass and create their artwork. It is the largest hot shop in North America. Industry experts from the Craft and Design Glass Studio at Sheridan College, the Pilchuck Glass School and the Corning Museum of Glass advised the producers on the construction of the facility and provide advice and assistance to the contestants at each round.

Blown Away Controversy

Blown Away Controversy

Deborah Czeresko

The winner of the first season of Blown Away caused controversy among the viewers of the reality show. In 2019, the show’s controversial star, Deborah Czeresko, won the competition and a $60,000 cash prize and an artist residency at the Corning Museom of Glass. Czeresko began her career at the New York Experimental Glass Workshop in 1987 and is a well-known and successful glassblower. Still, many Blown Away fans protested that she was chosen as the winner by the judges. They claimed that the reason she was chosen wasn’t because she created high-caliber art, but because she proclaimed political messages during the show.

She always explained that as a glassblower, she wanted to be a role model for women working in male-dominated professions. When she talked about the eggs she created in the season finale, she stated that they were “typically female” as they represent female ovary and went on to talk about the binary opposites of gender, masculinity and femininity. Because of this, fans of the show accused her of being a TERF – a radical feminist who excludes transsexuals – and they believed that the jury was practicing identity politics.

In addition, Clayton Badger launched a campaign on change.org for Marblemedia to reverse Deborah’s win. He claimed, “Deborah’s works often won because of the message the judges interpreted, and not because she produced high caliber art.” Many fans who signed the petition commented on Deborah’s arrogance and attention-seeking, as well as the feminist discourse she engaged in from the beginning of the show, which they believe led to her winning the hearts of the judges.

What do you think about the Blown Away controversy? Do you think Deborah deserved to win? Who do you think was the deserving contestant? Write us your opinion in the comments below.
