Barbarians Cast – Ages, Partners, Characters

Barbarians is a German historical war drama centered around the events during the Roman Empire’s occupation of Germania and the Germanic tribes’ response to it: one of the most significant rebellions in history. The series came to Netflix in 2020 and had only 6 episodes. Thankfully, this year on October 21, Barbarians Season 2 will be available on the platform.

If we turn to the Barbarians cast, we will see that they are very well-known actors in their own country but may be lesser known by international audiences. Here is everything you need to know about the show’s cast and characters to work as a refresher before the 2nd season arrives.

Jeanne Goursaud

One of the show’s main characters is Thusnelda, a noblewoman belonging to the Germanic Cherusci tribe. She is the daughter of Segestes, who favored the Romans against his own people. However, Thusnelda supported Arminius against the Roman army and helped him unite the tribes. This unique character is portrayed by Jeanne Goursaud, a 26-year-old German actress known for her role as Jazz in Para – We Are the King (2021) and Janina Nowak in Wishlist (2017-2018). As per her personal life, Goursaud does not reveal any private information, especially about her dating life.

Goursaud is definitely among the Barbarians cast members we will see in the 2nd season of the show.

Laurence Rupp

Now maybe the show’s star is Laurence Rupp, giving life to the historical hero Arminius. Arminius used to be a member of the Cherusci Germanic tribe but was given away to the Roman army as a hostage when he was a child. He returns to Germania to help his foster father, a Roman general Varus, maintain order in the region. But after seeing how the Roman army inflicts violence and many other atrocities on his people, he switches sides and becomes the new chieftain of his tribe.

Rupp can be easily recognized by German audiences or those interested in German shows and films. A few of the projects he was in are as follows: Mitten im 8en – Der ganz normale Alltagswahnsinn (2017), FC Rückpass (2010), Trakehnerblut (2017), and Tatort (2007-2020). We will see Rupp in the 2nd season of the series for sure.

Rupp is 35 years old. He is dating Paula Schramm, a German actress. The couple appeared together on a red carpet the last March.

David Schütter

David Schütter as Folkwin Wolfspeer in Barbarians

Although the show’s many characters are based on historical characters, Folkwin Wolfspeer is not. He is a fictional character created for the series. Folkwin is Thusnelda’s lover and is a strong warrior. He is portrayed by David Schütter, a 31-year-old German actor known for his small role in Charlie’s Angels (2019). He also played in 8 Days (2019), 4 Blocks (2018-2019), and Para – We Are King (2021). The actor is in a relationship with Lary Poppins, a German singer. We expect Folkwin to reappear in Barbarians Season 2.

Gaetano Aronica

The aforementioned Varus, a Roman general and politician, who fought in the Battle of the Teutoburg against the Germanic tribes. As you may remember, Varus couldn’t stomach losing to the so-called barbarians and felt humiliated. He committed suicide as a result. The general is portrayed by Gaetano Aronica, an Italian actor born in 1963. He is known for Malena (2000), Three Days of Anarchy (2004), Squadra mobile (2017), and On My Skin (2018). Since his character died, we don’t expect Aronica to show up in Season 2, but maybe we can see him in flashbacks. Not much is known about the actor’s personal life.

Sinha Melina Gierke

Another Barbarians cast member is Sinha Melina Gierke, appearing in 2 episodes as Raskild. Raskild is from Marcomanni, a Germanic tribe. She is enslaved in a Roman camp where she meets Folkwin. Both of them manage to escape from the Romans. The actress is known for 23 Morde (2019), Winberg (2015), and Down There in Heaven (2019). The German actress is 33 years old, and we expect to see her again in Season 2. Not much is known about her personal life.

Eva Verena Müller

The last Barbarians cast member on our list is Eva Verena Müller, playing Irmina, Thusnelda’s mother. She is not a historical figure and was created solely for the series. We expect to see her in the 2nd season. The actress, Müller, is a 43-year-old German actress who had a lead role in the German series Koslowski & Haferkamp (2014). Whether the actress is in a relationship is not certain.
