Is Narco-Saints Based on a True Story?

Narco-Saints is based on a true story.

Yes, Narco-Saints is based on a true story and was adapted for television by Yoon Jong-bin and Kwon Sung-Hui. The series is based on the life of real-life drug lord Jo Bong-Haeing. Not much is known about Jo Bong-Haeing’s past life, but he had to flee South Korea in 1994 after being charged with fraud.

Although the series is based on true events, it’s a highly dramatized and fictionalized version of the true story, which means that some events and the names of the characters have been changed in the script. It’s about the life of Kang In-Gu, an ordinary businessman who travels to the South American country of Suriname to earn a living by fishing. However, he gets involved in a dangerous plan to capture a dangerous drug cartel leader who has taken control of Suriname. Although the mentioned drug cartel really existed, its name was changed in the series. Also, the businessman who’s after the drug king probably didn’t exist and was invented by the scriptwriters to support the plot of the series.

Co-creator Yoon Jong-bin spoke openly in an interview about how the series came to be. Yoon revealed that he was initially asked to make a movie about the actual drug lord in Suriname. He decided to turn the true story into a six-part television series after understanding that it would be difficult to portray the story in a two-hour movie. So we can say that Narco-Saints follows the true story of a drug lord.

Regardless of whether they’re based on a true story or not, series about drug trafficking have always attracted the attention of crime fans. Series like Breaking Bad, Ozark or even Prison Break have given us the appeal of watching pure fiction. Shows like Narco-Saints and the Colombian TV series Narcos, on the other hand, have also provided us with true history from the lives of real dangerous men while embellishing their stories with a touch of fiction.

The story of the series is set in the South American country of Suriname. However, the filming locations of Narco-Saints vary from South Korea, especially Jeju Island, to the Dominican Republic. Many of the important scenes were filmed in the Dominican Republic, but the cast shot some scenes of the series on Jeju Island in South Korea, the largest and most populous island in South Korea.

Due to the COVID -19 pandemic, production of the series, which was scheduled to be filmed in the Dominican Republic last April, was postponed indefinitely. The company later decided to shoot in the Dominican Republic rather than Suriname for about two months starting in November, after filming began last April on a set in South Korea.
