Is House of the Dragon really happening? Long before Game of Thrones ended its eight-year run, there were speculations that HBO planned to release multiple spinoffs and prequel series set in George R. R. Martin’s universe. While one program which was planned to be set thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones was given the green light, the network chose to cancel it.
As we said, there were many spinoff projects to be adapted, and the other projects are still in the process, and it looks like we will be able to watch them. Actually, one of them will be here shortly for us to enjoy, titled House of the Dragon. The spin-off series House of the Dragon received a full-season order in 2019, and it is the first of the spinoffs in the works.
If you’ve read the novels, then you might know that House of the Dragon is Targaryens, and the new program will be about the Targaryen family, the clan from whom Daenerys and Jon Snow are from. Here is all we know about House of the Dragon and its release date.

Is House of the Dragon released?
No, House of the Dragon is not yet released, but HBO said House of the Dragon would be broadcast on August 21, 2022, so there is still time for us to watch this new spin-off series. New episodes will be released on Sunday, so GoT fans will be locked to the screens again on a weekend as usual. The show will undoubtedly be one of HBO’s biggest releases, and its production started in 2021. All of the monsters and family conflicts are on the way, and they will be released in August.
In May 2022, HBO released a teaser of House of the Dragon to hype up the fans after a long hiatus. If you weren’t already thrilled about the spinoff, watching the trailer down below will definitely get you all excited. The footage features some familiar faces, including Stark, Baratheon, and Valaryon, and we watch them kneeling before the heir Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen.
However, because there is a woman assuming the throne, it is most likely that bloodbath and political scheming is waiting for us in the House of the Dragon. In the trailer, Daemon Targaryen says “Dreams didn’t make us kings, dragons did”, clearly indicating we will see a lot of dragons in the new show. There are some shots of fire-breathing dragons, which is exactly what the fans desire. Even though this one doesn’t reveal much about the narrative, it does show more of the actors and promises. “Gods, kings, fire, and blood”: those four words are enough to describe any kind of Game of Thrones work. We also get a glimpse of the Iron Throne in the trailer down below.
What will House of the Dragon be about?
House of the Dragon is set 200 years before the start of Game of Thrones, and we will watch the origins and end of House Targaryen’s power. The show will also show us the iconic Dance of the Dragons and the Targaryen civil conflict that shattered Westeros which we read in Martin’s 2018 novel Fire & Blood.
It appears the show will begin its timeline with the chapter “Heirs of the Dragon,” which details the change of power from Jaehaerys to Viserys. It also appears that the series will chronicle Viserys’ tale while he becomes the king of Westeros.
Will Aegon Targaryen be in House of the Dragon?
Glynn-Carney will appear as Aegon in House of the Dragon at some point as we have seen the name in HBO’s House of the Dragon cast list, but he is listed as an additional cast member. This implies he’ll be in a lower role than the series’ core characters, and we might not be able to see him in major scenes.
In October 2020, HBO revealed the first major casting for House of the Dragon: Paddy Considine will play King Viserys Targaryen on the program, who is a warm, friendly, and respectable man who just aspires to carry on his grandfather’s heritage. But it also looks like his goodwill does not make him a powerful ruler as he struggles to keep Westeros together.
Emma D’Arcy and Matt Smith will fill out the Targaryen family as D’Arcy will portray the king’s first-born, dragon rider Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, with Smith playing King Viserys’ younger brother.
Why do dragons like Targaryens?
Targaryens are one of the Valyrian Houses capable of controlling dragons, and Valyrians have been able to manipulate dragons with the use of magic. Despite having three dragons, Dany has never been able to fully control them, because she did not have magic.
