1. Ghostbusters
Murray’s most pleasing picture, and Peter Venkman, the ultimate Murray character, will always be this Ivan Reitman comedy, no matter how many Wes Anderson, Jim Jarmusch, and Sofia Coppola films he does. “Back off, man. I’m a scientist”; “The flowers are still standing”; “Yes, it’s true, this man has no dick.” Murray’s lines in this film have become famous since few performers have played the character better.
2. Lost in Translation
Not a film that has withstood the test of time. But Murray is seductive as the jet-lagged and disillusioned Hollywood actor, and he was rightfully outraged when he lost his well-deserved Oscar (to Sean Penn for Mystic River). According to a long-running but never-confirmed allegation, Sofia Coppola modeled Murray’s character on Harrison Ford.
3. Groundhog Day
It’s challenging to picture anybody else as Phil Connors, the weatherman who doesn’t know whether he’s in a comedy or a tragedy. Unfortunately, Murray’s behavior on site led to a feud with director Harold Ramis that lasted practically until Ramis’ death. Murray, like Phil, was fortunate to find forgiveness just in time.
4. The Monuments Men
We can put this movie, shot with excellent actors, in 4th place in Bill Murray’s performance. George Clooney’s 2014 war picture, The Monuments Men, was written and produced by Clooney and Grant Heslov. The picture features Bill Murray, Matt Damon, Clooney, Jean Dujardin, John Goodman, Hugh Bonneville, Bob Balaban, and Cate Blanchett.
The film is partially based on Robert M. Edsel and Bret Witter’s 2007 non-fiction book The Monuments Men: Nazi Thieves, Allied Heroes, and the Greatest Treasure Hunt in History. It follows an Allied group from the Monuments, Fine Arts, and Archives program. They searched for and saved works of art and other culturally significant artifacts before the Nazis destroyed or stole them during WWII.
5. Moonrise Kingdom

The lovers flee to a lonely beach after being abandoned by their guardians and rejected by their classmates. Meanwhile, the captain of the island’s police force (Willis) forms a search team of scouts and family members to find the runaways.
6. The Darjeeling Limited
