1883 and Yellowstone are two Paramount series, and there are a lot of similarities between Yellowstone and 1883. First of all, 1883 follows the Dutton family as they relocate from Texas to Montana, and Yellowstone is about the events that take place more than 100 years later. Taylor Sheridan, the show’s writer-producer, created 1883 as a prequel to the popular Paramount Network series Yellowstone which tells the present-day story of John Dutton who is a Montana rancher fighting to keep the ranch his family has owned for a very long time.

Even though both shows are set in different timelines, there are a lot of similarities between Yellowstone and 1883 that you will be shocked to know.

When we first meet the Duttons, proprietors of the enormous Yellowstone-Dutton Ranch in Montana, we realize they are not your typical family and it all gets explained in 1883, which also shows us the life of the previous Duttons! So, the family both shows are telling the tales of is the 1st one of similarities between Yellowstone and 1883.

In Yellowstone, John is the family patriarch, and his children are Lee, Kayce, Jamie, and Beth. There’s also the cruel cowboy Rip Wheeler who is like a son to John Dutton, and he also has his special place in the Dutton family. John Dutton is all about family and devotion, but the strife among the Duttons complicates John’s aim to defend their family’s property in Yellowstone.

Enough with Yellowstone’s Duttons, what is the relationship between the Duttons of 1883 and their grandchildren of the 2000s? James and Margaret Dutton were the first Duttons to settle in Montana in 1883 and the Duttons we watch in Yellowstone are all their grandchildren, adding more to the similarities between Yellowstone and 1883.

We meet James in the episode “Half The Money” when he assists a group of relocated Native Americans who want to bury a family member. James existed long before John Dutton III and these two characters are distanced by more than a century, and the two men are three generations apart.

Taylor Sheridan’s latest TV series 1883 covers the tale of the Dutton family and acts as a prologue to Yellowstone, so it is only natural for the atmosphere of these shows to be similar. When it comes to the atmosphere and environment, the series’ production office was in Fort Worth, and the first 2 episodes were shot at the Fort Worth Stockyards, which is a very similar-looking place to the Yellowstone’s set.

On the other hand, the Yellowstone ensemble spent most of their time in Montana filming on a real-life ranch in the region, which shows nothing but the true beauty of nature. The magnificent log cabin of the Dutton family is actually a really big home on Chief Joseph Ranch in Darby.

Since the show has to portray Western life no matter which time period they are telling, the atmosphere and the environment are the inevitable similarities between Yellowstone and 1883. Kevin Costner from Yellowstone emphasized the naturality of the set by saying that when you go outside, you see horses trotting and guys working, and the weather is another factor in what happens in the set.

So both shows have a western theme, adding to the similarities between Yellowstone and 1883. In both shows, you will see a lot of horses, themes of western life, and the true beauty of nature, so we can say that the themes of both shows are probably one of the biggest similarities between Yellowstone and 1883.
