This year marks the 50th anniversary of Luke Cage, one of Marvel’s most loved superheroes and comics. Marvel celebrated its fan-favorite comic with a Netflix show in 2016 that lasted only 2 seasons. Netflix did not renew the show for another season since then, and comic book fans have been upset not being able to see one of their favorite characters on screen.
The series followed Luke Cage (formerly known as Carl Lucas), who after a failed prison experiment, develops bulletproof and unbreakable skin. Realizing he has such immense power, Cage uses this opportunity to protect the people of New York. We know the series is over, but we know a few other shows that will make you feel like you are watching Luke Cage again. Here is a list of shows similar to Luke Cage.
Altered Carbon
A Show Similar to Luke Cage: Altered Carbon
Altered Carbon, which has 2 seasons available on Netflix, is an interesting sci-fi series that is set in the future, the year 2384. In the show, there are bodies called sleeves which are porters of stacks- devices that include a person’s consciousness and memories. The series starts with the main character Kovacs’ stack being pulled out of prison by an extremely rich man who wants Kovacs to solve a murder, his own. Kovacs is played by Joel Kinnaman in the first season and Anthony Mackie in the second season.
Although at first instance Altered Carbon seems nothing like Luke Cage, we believe Luke Cage fans will be able to follow Kovacs, which is the hero of this story, just like they followed Cage. The series is filled with action sequences and drama that Luke Cage fans need.
Cursed
Cursed (2020)
Cursed is an American fantasy drama series based on a character called Nimue (played by 13 Reasons Why’s Katherine Langford) who has a mysterious gift. Nimue encounters young Arthur on her journey to deliver an ancient sword to Merlin. Nimue is ostracized from her village because she is believed to be cursed. Right after her village is attacked by a group called Red Paladins, her mother gives Nimue an ancient sword to be taken to Merlin, the hundreds of years old magician.
Unfortunately, the series only lasted one season and was not renewed for a second season. It has only ten episodes, so it is a quick watch. It will be an interesting watch for Luke Cage fans.
Sense 8
Sense8 (2015-2018)
Sense8 brought up devastating news when Netflix announced that the series would not be returning for a third season. With its interesting plot and complicated heroes, the show quickly gathered a huge fan base. The show followed 8 people from around the world who suddenly became mentally linked, being able to hear and see what the others are doing and experiencing. Throughout the series, we follow this group of talented heroes who become friends (and even more) on the journey of discovering their identities.
The show is filled with action scenes because our characters have a few enemies whom they need to fight against. It is only 2 seasons and has 24 episodes in total. Sense8 can be watched on Netflix.
Shadow and Bone
Shadow and Bone (2021- )
Shadow and Bone is an American fantasy series that launched its first season on Netflix in April 2021. The show was renewed for a second season only 2 months after, June 2021. The series’ main protagonist is Alina Starkov (played by Jessie Mei Li) who is an orphan mapmaker. She discovers that she has a special gift of controlling light and while some people venerate her as a saint, some others try to kidnap and kill her.
The second season is yet to come and will have only 8 episodes just like the first season. With the show’s action, adventure, and drama Luke Cage fans will not be disappointed.
The OA
The OA (2016-2019)
Another show on our list of shows similar to Luke Cage is The OA. This fantasy and mystery series follows Prairie (Brit Marling) who comes back home after 7 years of being lost. However, previously blind Prairie is no longer blind when she comes back home which makes people around her see her both as a threat and a miracle. Prairie calls herself the OA (original angel) because she has scars on her back.
The series has 2 seasons in total, 8 episodes in each season, all available on Netflix. Unfortunately, it was not renewed for another season.
The Last Show Similar To Marvel’s Luke Cage: Jupiter’s Legacy
Jupiter’s Legacy (2021)
Jupiter’s Legacy is a Netflix original series that aired on the platform in May 2021. The series is about Sheldon Sampson (Josh Duhamel) who travels to an unknown island in the Atlantic ocean where he and six others gain superpowers. Sheldon creates a superhero team called the Union of Justice whose guiding ideals are to never actually kill anyone and never interfere in politics. However, the next generation of superheroes fails to live up to these ideals. For example, we see Sheldon’s son Brandon (Andrew Horton) killing an enemy which ignites a public debate over whether the superheroes’ ideals are still relevant or not.
The show only has 1 season and will not be returning for another. It has only 8 episodes and is available on Netflix.
