Is We Own This City a True Story?

Is We Own This City a True Story?

We Own This City is a true story.

Yes, We Own This City is based on a true story. The HBO show is based on the book We Own This City: A True Story of Crime, Cops and Corruption by investigative journalist Justin Fenton of the Baltimore Sun. The book is about the investigation of members of the Baltimore Police Department’s Gun Trace Task Force in 2017, which led to the arrest of eight police officers for being involved in a robbery and extortion operation that targeted drug dealers and innocent people, particularly black citizens. All of the police officers involved were eventually found guilty of racketeering, robbery, extortion and overtime fraud.

The series follows the same story of the downfall of the Gun Trace Task Force and focuses on one of the eight police officers convicted of various corruption charges in 2018 and 2019. So, we can say that We Own This City is largely inspired by real events, but of course, it also contains a pinch of fiction.

Is We Own This City a Sequel To The Wire?

Is We Own This City a Sequel To The Wire?

The Wire

We Own This City was developed by author George Pelecanos and former police reporter David Simon, who also developed the once popular crime series The Wire. However, We Own This City isn’t a direct sequel to The Wire. Although they tell similar stories and are both set in Baltimore, they follow different storylines. The Wire deals with Baltimore’s drug scene in general, both from the perspective of drug dealers and law enforcement, while We Own This City focuses specifically on the rise and fall of the Gun Trace Task Force. Even though the two series aren’t directly connected, it can be said that The Wire is a predecessor of We Own This City, and the latter follows the former.
