Fans of the BBC nursing drama Call the Midwife are asking when the show would return for a 12th season. The successful series, which has been airing since 2012, contains an annual Christmas special. Fans are eager to discover if there will be another series after the 11th season’s emotional final episode aired recently.
Following the cancellation of Holby City, it is one of the BBC’s few medical dramas left for the watchers to follow. We will not ruin things for anyone who hasn’t seen the program yet, but it looks the show has left fans wanting more.
Season eleven was full of surprises and chaos. The season finale of Call the Midwife sent fans into a frenzy, with a train disaster tying the fates of cherished characters. Sister Julienne (Jenny Agutter) and the good doctor (aka Stephen McGann’s Dr. Turner) were wounded and confined, and their condition was growing increasingly hazardous.
Their lives were in jeopardy due to a head injury and a probable heart attack. Thankfully, the two survived, but the collision killed the driver, whose pregnant wife was in the process of giving birth.

Meanwhile, Nonnatus House was required to comply with the turmoil in the absence of Sister Julienne at the helm of their ship, as well as Nurse Trixie Franklin (Helen George), who left in chapter five. Nurse Phyllis Crane (Linda Bassett) rushed to the aid, arriving from her trip to save the day and ease viewers’ fears.
That was a lot to take in. It’s best to recharge your batteries with a cup of tea as we discuss what the future of Call The Midwife holds.
Call the Midwife Season 12 Release Date
There is only good news when it comes to renewals. Not only has the BBC put into service the program for the 12th season in 2023, but it has also been granted the go-ahead for the 13th season in 2024.
Heidi Thomas, the showrunner, screenwriter, and executive producer talked of the success of the show, declaring:
“It’s a wonderful honor to be able to reflect on a decade of Call the Midwife while also knowing that our journey is far from ended. We are overjoyed to be able to continue for a few more years!”
She continued to talk about the new season, “We have a strong history of the show, but I am sure we will have a more amazing future full of joy and success. The next one will be full of old favorites, new characters, higher hemlines, and new ideas, just like Nonnatus House. The stories we tell are like newborns: they never stop growing, we adore them all, and we promise to do our best for each and every one of them.”
Season 12 will consist of eight hour-long episodes as well as a feature-length Christmas Special. Although 2023 is a long time to wait, viewers will be able to enjoy the show much sooner because Season 11 will also include a Christmas Special.
What happened to Chummy on Call the Midwife?
Miranda Hart, who portrayed Chummy on Call The Midwife, was one of the show’s funniest and most liked cast members.
Camilla “Chummy” Noakes was one of the first nurses at Nonnatus House on Call The Midwife, first appearing in Series 1. Yet, fans of the program will have noted that Miranda has been significantly missing from all recent episodes of the drama, including the most current series – Call The Midwife season nine.
Chummy was last seen on Call The Midwife in series 4 transitioning to a mother and infant unit when she was transferred to a mother and baby ward.
Miranda previously told The Mirror about her departure: “Perhaps Chummy can come back in the next season as an educated, insane 60s hippy having a fling with Paul McCartney.”
How many seasons of Call the Midwife are there?
The show has released the 11th season recently. The BBC has re-commissioned Call the Midwife for seasons 12 (2023) and 13 (2024), which will take viewers up to 1969 or maybe the 1970s in the show’s history. In total, the show will have 13 seasons.
“The continued success of Call the Midwife is a monument to the amazing devotion and ingenuity of its creator Heidi Thomas and its producers Pippa Harris and Ann Tricklebank,” said Piers Wenger, Director of BBC Drama.
“We are happy to have guaranteed the future of Call the Midwife for two further seasons beyond those now in development, and look forward to more experiences for the residents of Nonnatus House in the years ahead.”
When does Call the Midwife start?
Call the Midwife premieres on BBC before it airs on PBS. That means that U.K. fans have already watched the entirety of Season 11, which started in early January and concluded on February 20.
Typically, fans in the United States must wait many months for new episodes to air on PBS. However, the wait is much shorter this year. Season 11 of Call the Midwife starts on PBS on Sunday, March 20, 2022, at 8 p.m. ET. Every Sunday till May 8, new episodes will premiere.
The 2021 Holiday Special may be viewed on the Call the Midwife Official Website. Full episodes of Call the Midwife may be viewed online or on your preferred media players, such as Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Android, iOS, or Samsung Smart TV, by using the PBS Video app. The 90-minute show will be available for viewing until January 24, 2022.
