According to the showrunner Jason Rothenberg, The 100 was canceled neither because Warner Bros wanted it nor the viewership numbers were going down. Rothenberg insists that 7 seasons seemed enough for a show and that he did not want to extend it for 10 or 12 seasons just for the sake of doing it. Of course, we were upset to learn that the 7th season was the end of The 100 but we still respect the decision of the showrunner as television history has seen too many tv shows ruined by the high number of their seasons.
The story is set in a post-apocalyptic world, 97 years after the Earth was ruined because of a nuclear war that wiped out almost all of humanity. The remaining few are able to live in a space station orbiting the Earth, called the Ark, and they are able to live without problems for 3 generations. Problems arise when the life-support system in the Ark starts to fail and 100 delinquents are sent to Earth to check out whether the environment there is habitable or not.
