My Best Friend’s Wedding
Our Lady of the Concave Stomach portrays the skinniest food critic in movie history. Yet, she manages to hold our sympathies while acting despicably as she attempts to ruin her male friend’s engagement. Rupert Everett, Julia’s homosexual friend, with three Burt Bacharach singalongs, seven pratfalls, and a zinger of a last line, offers aching envy a frothy camp makeover.
Notting Hill
Hugh Grant owns a bookstore not far from Portobello Road, and Julia is a well-known movie actress. Like his earlier scripts, this one by Richard Curtis is more of a collection of haphazardly related scenes than a story that is unfolding. However, some of the episodes are entertaining, and both Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant are charming in this prosecco-bubble romcom.
Pretty Woman
On Hollywood Boulevard, a sex worker runs upon a millionaire who pays for her to go dress shopping before they fall in love. Due exclusively to Roberts, who plays the character that catapulted her to fame, and Richard Gere, who was enamored by this adorable popsy in thigh-high heels, this toxic tosh succeeds as a romantic comedy. She has a truck driver’s gait, but so does Garbo.
Ocean’s Twelve
Roberts blends in well with the laid-back supporting cast in Steven Soderbergh’s caper film sequel, which at times resembles Pure Cinema in terms of its illogical premise (stock certificates, a Fabergé egg, who cares), evocative soundtrack, and breezy styling. Watch as gorgeous movie stars stroll through Amsterdam, Paris, and Rome as Julia Roberts impersonates Mrs. Ocean (Roberts), a famous movie actress.
The Pelican Brief
Roberts portrays a law student who, upon discovering a tedious conspiracy, is being pursued by assassins in this John Grisham thriller. She is at her most Bambi-like in this role. Denzel Washington portrays a reporter who aids her in eluding killers while rejecting any suggestion of interracial romance. Even if Julia is sporting at least one baggy sweater, some Hitchcockian flirtation would have been appropriate.
Duplicity
In Tony Gilroy’s follow-up to Michael Clayton, this international romcom-cum-caper stars Roberts and Clive Owen as competing corporate spies. There is less than what first appears after the storyline twists and chronological juggling is straightened out, but there are worse things than seeing two attractive actors flashing fake grins and having sex in opulent settings.
Closer
In Mike Nichols’ adaptation of Patrick Marber’s play with a London setting, Jude Law, Natalie Portman, Clive Owen, and Roberts (playing a photographer) switch partners, have (offscreen) sex, and discuss adultery with harsh but not very intelligent honesty. Even though Julia Roberts’ visage speaks a thousand words, the crude dialogue is nonetheless obstinately theatrical.
The Mexican
The most incredible sequences in this misfired road movie-romcom-thriller are about Roberts, playing his dissatisfied lover, and connecting with the homosexual hitman (James Gandolfini in excellent form). During her journey to Las Vegas, he abducts her. Forget about Brad Pitt, who plods across Mexico in quest of an antique gun.
Mona Lisa Smile
The 2003 American drama film Mona Lisa Smile, which was written by Lawrence Konner and Mark Rosenthal and starred Julia Roberts, Kirsten Dunst, Julia Stiles, and Maggie Gyllenhaal, was directed by Mike Newell. It was produced by Revolution Studios and Columbia Pictures in collaboration with Red Om Films Productions. Julia Roberts won a record-breaking $25 million for her portrayal, the most any actress has ever made.
Stepmom
Stepmom is a 1998 American comedy-drama film produced by Wendy Finerman, Mark Radcliffe, and Michael Barnathan under the direction of Chris Columbus. In the movie, Susan Sarandon, Ed Harris, and Julia Roberts play a terminally sick lady who must live with her ex-new husband’s girlfriend, who will eventually become their children’s stepmother.
Conspiracy Theory
American political action thriller Conspiracy Theory was released in 1997 and was directed by Richard Donner. Mel Gibson’s eccentric cab driver and Julia Roberts’ Justice Department attorney (who becomes engaged in his life) are the main characters in Brian Helgeland’s original script. Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, the movie was a commercial success.
Eat Pray Love
Eat Pray Love is a 2010 American biographical romantic drama film starring Julia Roberts as Elizabeth Gilbert. It is based on Gilbert’s 2006 autobiography of the same name. The movie, released in the United States on August 13, 2010, was co-written and directed by Ryan Murphy. Although the reviews from reviewers were conflicting, it was a commercial success, earning $204.6 million globally against a $60 million budget.
